Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid Course

This qualification is designed for those wishing to become a paediatric first aider in the workplace with a responsibility for the welfare of infants and children. This qualification is intended for those already working or preparing to work in the child-care sector.

Those gaining this qualification will know that first aid is the responsibility of everyone involved in the childcare environment. Topics within this course are regarded by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) as being important to maintaining good practice in the safe, prompt and effective treatment of injuries and ill health of infants and children who are under the care of trained personnel.

Course syllabus

  • Role and responsibilities of a Paediatric First Aider, including record keeping
  • Assessing an emergency situation safely
  • First aid for paediatrics who are breathing but not responsive
  • First aid for paediatrics who are not breathing
  • Treating a blocked airway (choking)
  • Asthma and Diabetes
  • Seizures
  • Allergic reactions and anaphylactic shock
  • Treating head injuries and spinal injuries
  • Bleeding and medical shock, including cuts, grazes, splinters and bruises
  • Burns and electrocution
  • Administering first for muscular, bone or joint injuries
  • Poisoning, bites and stings
  • Eye, nose and ear conditions
  • Treatment of sickle cell, meningitis and febrile convulsions
  • Heart conditions
  • Effects of extreme heat and cold on the body

Course duration

  • Twelve hours excluding breaks
  • Courses are normally run over two seven-hour days but other combinations are available, such as four three-hour evenings etc.
  • Weekend courses are available for your group

Course dates

  • Closed courses can be held at your site for your group of up to 12 students at times and date to suit you.

  • The practical assessment of learners for the qualification is completed throughout the course delivery. This ongoing assessment will involve learners demonstrating practical first aid skills across a number of areas.
  • Learners are required to answer a series of written questions ensuring their understanding of the theory content is sufficient to meet the required standard.
